Waterloo Water Softener Rebate: Only soften your hot water and save!

Waterloo Region's Water Softener Rebate Program

In December 2019, the Region of Waterloo Planning and Works Committee decided to implement a water softener rebate program for the area.

As part of this program, you can receive a $50 water softener rebate to go towards the cost of converting your plumbing so that your water softener will only soften your hot water.

The goal of the water softener rebate program is to:

  • Cut down on the amount of chlorides that enter our local rivers

  • Conserve backwash drinking water

1. Why Chlorides Are Harmful to Our Rivers and Lakes

When salt dissolves in water, its sodium and chloride ions that were bonded together in their dry state separate.

High concentrations of chloride ions in our freshwater lakes and rivers are harmful to aquatic life, often hindering their survival, growth, and reproduction.

Salt is not removed during the wastewater treatment process. It is estimated that each year about 21,000 tonnes of salt is discharged in the Waterloo Region and ends up in our local rivers, thus negatively affecting the aquatic life there.

2. How Softening only Hot Water Can Conserve Backwash Drinking Water

During your water softening process, a cycle called backwashing occurs. When your water softener is backwashing, it sends water into the resin tank at a fast speed to flush out the iron minerals from your tank. Then, that water is drained away.

This backwashing cycle uses a relatively large amount of water that could have been used for drinking water.

In the Waterloo Region, about 7% (1.5 billion litres) of the water used by each household is used for water softener backwashing.

By converting your water softener plumbing so that it only softens the hot water that you are using, you will be cutting down on the amount of clean water that is used for this backwashing cycle.

Duration of Waterloo's Water Softener Rebate

The pilot program will begin on July 1, 2020 and will run until December 30, 2023. Over the course of the offer, the Region of Waterloo is hoping to give out 175 rebates in 2020 and then an additional 350 rebates in each of the subsequent 3 until the program ends.

Water Softener Rebate: How Do You Apply?

You can pre-qualify for the rebate program by filling out an application form.

The application form and further details about applying for the rebate program will be revealed by the Region of Waterloo in the spring of 2020.

You will also need either a signed plumber receipt or a brief inspection that will confirm that the conversion was made.

Other Benefits of Only Softening Your Hot Water

You Will help Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions:

Because you will be reducing the total amount of water that you use and the total amount of salt that you need to buy, you will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions too.

When you use less water, less water will need to be treated and pumped out to you. Therefore, less energy will be used to treat this water. This reduces your carbon footprint.

The same is true about using less salt, as less energy needs to be spent to produce that salt.

You Will Save Money:

Because you will be softening less water each day, you will save money on both the cost of water and the cost of salt to soften your water. Studies have shown that about 65% of the water we use is cold and only 35% is hot.

By only softening your hot water, you can significantly reduce the amount of salt that your need to buy for your softener and you also reduce the amount of water that your water softener uses in the back washing process.

The following chart will give you a possible household savings for a family of three.

Your savings will add up as time goes on. For example:

  • After 5 years you will have saved $420

  • After 7 years you will have saved $588

  • After 10 years you will have saved $840

Your Water Softener Should Last Longer:

Because your softener will be softening a smaller amount of water each day, your water softener should last longer as it won't be working as hard.

Your Hot Water Appliances Will Still Be Protected:

Your appliances that use hot water such as your dishwasher and hot water heater will still be protected as the water in them will be softened.
