Rebate Program Water Heaters: Only soften your hot water - save money and the environment

Rebate Program Water Heaters: What Is It?

In July 2020, the Region of Waterloo is launching a rebate program to encourage you to only use your water softeners for softening only the water that goes into your hot water heater.

Under this program, you can get a one-time rebate of $50 per household to help cover the cost of changing over your plumbing so that your current water softener will only soften the hot water you and your family uses.

Rebate Program Water Heaters: How Long Will It Run?

This pilot program is set to begin on July 1, 2020 and run until December 31, 2023. The Waterloo Region hopes to provide 175 rebates to homeowners in 2020 and a further 350 rebates in each of the following years until it finishes in 2023.

Rebate Program Water Heaters: How Much Will the Plumbing Conversion Cost?

According to Steve Gombos, the Water Efficiency Manager for the Region of Waterloo, it will probably cost somewhere between $200 and $250 to have your plumbing converted so that your water softener will only soften your hot water. This figure was obtained by asking a number of of local plumbers.

Rebate Program Water Heaters: How Much Could It Save You?

According to the Region of Waterloo, switching to only softening your hot water could reduce your household salt and water usage by about 65%.

That means that if there are 3 people in your home, you could potentially save about $84 a year in water and salt costs. In just five years you will have saved $420!

Rebate Program Water Heaters: Why It Works

Only softening your hot water means that you can save on water and salt usage and still reap most of the benefits of softening your water. This is because hard water scaling happens much more quickly when your water is heated.

Hot water appliances and pipes are more affected by hard water, so treating your hot water will protect these appliances and plumbing.

Treating your cold water is less important than treating your hot water and will reduce the amount of water and salt that you use.

Rebate Program Water Heaters: How Do You Apply?

You can pre-qualify for the rebate program through an application form. You will also need either a signed plumber receipt or a brief inspection that will confirm that the conversion was made.

The application form and further details about applying for the rebate program will be revealed by the Region of Waterloo in the spring of 2020.

Benefits of Only Softening Your Hot Water

There are many benefits for both you and the environment by converting your water softener to only soften the hot water used in your household.

You Will Help to Reduce the Amount Of Backwash Water: In the Waterloo Region, about 7% (1.5 billion litres) of the water used by each household is used for water softener backwashing (the process of actually softening your hard water).

Reducing the amount of softening will mean that the total amount of water used in each home will be reduced as well.

You Will Be Reducing the Amount of Salt in Local Rivers: Salt is not removed during the wastewater treatment process. It is estimated that each year about 21,000 tonnes of salt is discharged in the Waterloo Region and ends up in our local rivers, including the Grand River.

Salt is not removed from wastewater so it ends up in our rivers

You Will Be Helping to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Because you will be reducing the total amount of water that you use and the total amount of salt that you need to buy, you will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions too.

When you use less water, less water will need to be treated and pumped out to you, therefore less energy will be used to treat this water thus reducing your carbon footprint.

The same is true about using less salt, as less energy will be spent producing that salt.

You Will Save Money on Purchasing Salt: Because you will be softening less water each day, you won't go through as much water softener salt.

Your Water Softener Should Last Longer: Because your softener will be softening a smaller amount of water each day, your water softener should last longer as it won't be working as hard.

Your Hot Water Appliances Will Still Be Protected: Your appliances that use hot water, such as your dishwasher and hot water heater, will still be protected as the water in them will be softened.
