Kenmore Water Softener Repair Steps
If your water softener is not working as it should there are a few steps that you can take before calling for a repair.
Step 1: Check All Your Connections
Check that your water softener is plugged in properly and that there is power going to your outlet (check your breaker switch to see if it is plugged in but there is no display showing up on your screen).
Try not to plug in your unit using an extension cord that other devices are also using. Any sudden changes in the amount of power could shut down your water softener.

You should also check that all of your Kenmore water softener's tubes are connected properly.
For example, make sure that the inlet pipe that is located at the back of your softener near the top is fully plugged in and that the overflow tubing from your salt tank is also plugged in at the right side of your softener.
The inlet pipe is located at the back of your water softener
Step 2: Check for Signs of Leaking
Take a good look around your water softener to see if there are any signs of leakages like puddles of water on the floor or wet spots.
Take a look at your overflow drain tube to make sure that it isn't worn or cracked. If it is, it will need to be replaced.
Step 3: Prevent Flooding
Make sure that your valve drain hose and overflow drain tubing are aimed either at your floor drain, standpipe or laundry tub. If they have been moved away from one of these areas, you may get flooding.
Make sure your drain pipe and hose are securely placed inside your standpipe or other drainage area
Step 4: Check Your Salt Levels
Take a look to make sure that you have enough salt in your tank. In addition, if your salt levels never seem to be going down or they seem to be going down at a much slower rate, you may have a salt bridge.
A salt bridge is a hard crust of salt that forms in the brine tank leaving an empty space between the water entering the tank and the salt itself.
Gently tapping on the side of your tank with a rubber mallet may dislodge the bridge for you, or you may need to use a broom handle or other long object to get rid of the bridge. The following video will show you how.
A salt bridge is relatively easy to fix
Step 5: Check Your Settings
Your Kenmore water softener may actually be working fine, but the problem could be with its settings.
If you live in the Kitchener-Waterloo area, your water is incredibly hard. This means you will need a higher softening setting than the factory default setting.
To change the water hardness level on your unit do the following:
Press "Select" on the front display panel
Press "Hardness"
Press "Change"
Use the arrow keys to raise or lower your water hardness settings to an appropriate amount.
If you are unsure of what the best settings would be, contact the professionals at WaterSmart.
Set your water softener so that it reflects the hardness of your water
Step 6: Check Your Salt Tank to See if It Is Full of Water
Take a look inside your salt tank when your Kenmore water softener is not regenerating. It should not be full of water. If it is, it could be that your nozzle and venturi are dirty or blocked.

If you prefer to have a professional deal with this, as it does involve taking apart several components in your machine, contact WaterSmart.

"I purchased a water softener through Watersmart and I was very pleased with the whole process. I did not know much about water softeners but the salesman helped inform me how they work and which unit would work best for me. The install went great without any surprises and the unit works great. Would recommend to anyone"
