1. Kenmore switches
The rotor position switch tells the water softener timer what position the rotor is in.
As a result, the timer knows when to start the motor that turns the valve rotor through the water-softening cycles.
If the switch breaks, the motor runs constantly, which will lead to a breakdown.
You must replace a broken rotor position switch with the manufacturer-approved water softener part.

2. Bypass valves
Bypass valves allow you to turn off the water to the softener for maintenance while still having water throughout your house pipes.
For example, you could be:
Watering your lawn or garden
Washing your car
Filling up a pool or pond
None of the tasks above require soft water, hence why you might want to use the bypass valve.
There are three main types of bypass valves for water softeners. Most residential units will have either a valve that you push in or turn to put your water softener in bypass. Commercial softeners, on the other hand, often have a three-valve bypass operation.
To find out what type of bypass valve your water softener has, take a look at the back or top of your unit. Your bypass valve should be located close to where your water pipes are connected to your softener.
A turn-to-bypass unit will have one or two handles/knobs that you can turn
A push-to-bypass unit will have a button that you can push in
A lever-style bypass has a lever that you can move from side to side
If you have a commercial unit, you may see three separate valves connected to the pipes that are attached to your softener.
If you are still not sure what type of bypass valve you have or where it is located, consult your Kenmore parts manual or check with us.

3. Water softener clips
Clips are used to attach the float assembly in the brine tank and the control valve to the bypass.
You must release all water pressure from the system to prevent clips from breaking, then squeeze the connection until the clip feels loose before removing it.
1" clips are particularly difficult to install. To make things easier, push the clip in and work on one side. This eliminates play and locks the clip in place.
