Should You Use Distilled Water For Baby Formula?
Using distilled water for baby formula will protect your baby from fluorosis
If your tap water contains fluoride and your baby's main source of food comes from mixing a power or liquid-concentrate formula with water, then you might run the risk of your child developing faint white lines or streaks on their teeth. This is known as fluorosis.
Using distilled water will minimize the risk of your baby developing fluorosis. You could also use the following alternatives to lower their risk:
1. Can you use purified water for baby formula?
Purified water is also great for baby formula
Yes. Similar to distilled water, purified water also has the fluoride removed from it, along with other chemicals and minerals.
If you are concerned about your baby developing fluorosis, then purified water is a good choice for mixing with your powder or liquid-concentrate formula. In addition, many people prefer the taste of purified water to distilled water.
2. What is distilled water?
Distilled water is one of the purest forms of water you can get. It is produced by boiling water and collecting the steam that is produced.
This steam is then cooled to return it to its liquid state. The distilling process removes all of the impurities found in water and more than 99.9% of the minerals dissolved in water.
3. Is distilled water the same as purified water?
Both purified and distilled water for baby formula are good choices
Distilled and purified water are similar in that they have almost all of the impurities and minerals removed from them. The removal process is different, however.
To get purified water, you use a process called reverse osmosis, where water is passed through a tiny membrane that traps and removes the microbes and chemicals.
4. Is distilled water soft water?
Yes, however, soft water isn't necessarily distilled. Soft water refers to water that has very few dissolved minerals such as calcium and magnesium in it. If the mineral level in your water is less than 60 mg/l then it is considered to be soft.
If your water is hard, you can make it soft by installing a water softener. The following diagram will explain how a water softener works to remove the calcium and magnesium in your water that will make it hard.
A water softener can make your water soft
Distilled water, on the other hand, has had almost all the minerals removed from it so it is considered soft as well.
5. Is a home distillation system economical?
Home distillation systems use a lot of energy to operate, making them quite expensive to run. A reverse osmosis system is a more economical alternative if you want to prepare your baby formula and to have purified water to drink in your home.
Another more economical solution would be to purchase a bottle of distilled water that you can use to make your baby formula. If you purchase a 10L re-fillable bottle of distilled water from WaterSmart, it will only cost you $4.50 plus a $10 deposit for the bottle.
6. Is distilled water good for babies?
Distilled water is indeed safe for babies to drink.
Yes. Distilled water is safe for babies to drink. Because the fluoride has been removed from distilled water, your doctor might recommend giving fluoride supplements to your baby once they are 6 months old as exposure to fluoride during infancy will help to prevent tooth decay.
7. Do you have to boil distilled water for formula?
No. Both distilled and purified water do not need boiling before mixing with your baby formula. Tap water, on the other hand, should be boiled for one minute and then left to cool to room temperature with the lid on.
8. When can babies have water to drink?
Babies can have water to drink when they start eating solids
It is recommended that you wait to give your baby water to drink until they are about 6 months old when you start to introduce solids into their diet. Breastfeeding and formula are the recommended sole source of nutrition and liquids up until 6 months old.
9. Is hard water harmful to my baby?
Hard water could make your baby more susceptible to eczema
According to a recent study led by King's College in London, researchers are finding that high levels of water hardness in your home could be linked to the development of eczema early in life.
Hard water and chlorine found in water may cause a breakdown of the skin's natural barrier thus leading to eczema in infants. This breakdown allows allergens to penetrate your baby's skin and make it more prone to allergic response.
The study found that babies living in a hard water area were up to 87% more likely to have eczema at 3 months of age. Having soft water in your home could help prevent your baby from developing eczema.
