1. What are fridge filters?

Fridge filters treat the drinking water dispensed from a refrigerator.

It’s one of the best, most cost-effective ways to ensure your family has access to clean water, according to Whirlpool.

Fridge filters reduce contaminants in the water that flows from your water source through your refrigerator dispenser and ice maker.

The water filter, located inside your refrigerator, usually uses a coconut shell-activated carbon filter to trap and absorb contaminants and pollutants in your tap water.

Coconut shells are commonly used for the activated carbon in the filter as they are a non-toxic, renewable source derived from nature.

Unlike a coal filter, coconut shell filters are a purer form of carbon with a higher surface volume of micropores ideal for removing impurities like chlorine and iron that can affect the taste and odour of drinking water.

This result is fresh-tasting water for drinking and cooking.

Fridge filters are a handy way to get great drinking water.

2. How do fridge filters work?

Most fridge water dispensers make it easy to access clean water using a three-part filtration process.

1. Particle-filtration

Fridge filters trap large sediments like sand or silt on the outside surface of the carbon filter. This improves the clarity of your drinking water.

2. Micro-filtration

As the water flows through the carbon filter, it captures medium-sized contaminants like sugars and cysts.

3. Absorption-Filtration

In the final phase of your fridge filtration process, microscopic contaminants, such as traces of pharmaceuticals and pesticides, are absorbed by the carbon filter.

The absorption-filtration phase removes contaminants to improve the taste and odour of your drinking water.

Note: Fridge filters are effective at what they're designed to do. They are excellent at eliminating the taste of chlorine, odour, and sediment.

However, keep in mind that fridge filters don’t soften water, remove iron, or prevent health hazards in untreated water. If your water comes from a well, for example, you're responsible for its safety and need more than a fridge filter to treat your water.

Well water typically requires whole-house water filtration, including some type of bacteria treatment.

3. When and how to replace fridge filters

Fridges filters should be replaced every 6 months.

Don’t leave a filter in place longer than a year. The longer you use a carbon filter beyond its maximum capacity, the more harmful your water could become.

While the specifics of replacing a filter vary from fridge to fridge, the process generally involves a simple insertion and twist to lock the filter in place.

Water will then need to be run through the filter to flush out compressed air before it is ready to use.
