The Essential Plumber Tools

There are pros and cons of hiring a plumber vs. tackling a project yourself.

Either way, there are several plumber tools necessary to get the job done right.

1. Pliers

Pliers are probably the most used tools in a plumber’s arsenal.

They offer leverage and allow you to move and grip small objects. Pliers also bend and shape wires and small rods. With pliers, you can stabilize, loosen, or tighten pipes.

Needle-nose and tongue-in-groove pliers, for instance, are the most common among plumbers’ tools.

Needle-nose pliers are handy because their narrow, pointed form can access hard-to-reach places.

Tongue-in-groove pliers adjust to fit nearly any object. You can slide its jaw and lock it in place. Plumbers frequently use this plier because of its versatility.

The 10" size should take care of most residential needs, but having a range of sizes is a good idea.

Pliers are one of the basic and essential tools for plumbers.

2. Wrenches

High on the list of plumbers’ tools are wrenches, and there are three that are quite necessary.

Pipe wrenches adjust using a toothed jaw that tightly grips materials. They give the plumber leverage to loosen or tighten threaded pipes and their fittings. Pipe wrenches tackle many different jobs. Their adjustable jaw fits large or oddly-shaped fasteners.

Basin wrenches access hard-to-reach areas under sinks. Their long bodies can reach far into cabinets without straining the plumber.

Strap wrenches are good for tightening or loosening pipes that have a finish on them. They use tension in a rubber or polyester strap to grip and turn, leaving the underlying material unharmed.

Without a good wrench set, a plumber can’t do their job.

3. Plumber’s putty

Also known as caulk, this is a simple but effective tool.

Plumbers’ putty stabilizes the base of a newly-installed toilet or sink and also prevents leakage from either fixture.

Plumbers use it to finish toilets, sinks, bathtubs, showers and drains to keep moisture from getting into any gaps or seams.

Unwanted moisture can lead to mould and mildew buildup, therefore, use plumbers putty!

Plumbers’ putty can prevent leaks around the base of your toilet.

4. Plunger and Auger

Plungers are necessary for professional plumbers and, well, anyone who has a toilet.

Simple blockages happen from time to time and a plumber can unclog your toilet fairly easily.

If it’s a deeper issue, though, an auger may be necessary.

An auger is also known as a plumber’s snake. It’s a coiled metal cable that unclogs toilets and sinks.

These are specialized plumber tools, so it’s best to call a professional before shoving one into your piping.

Sometimes you need something more flexible than a plunger to unclog a toilet.

5. Safety equipment

Plumbers need to protect themselves from chemicals, germs, and other materials as they dig around your toilets, tubs, sinks and pipes.

It’s important to cover hands, feet, ears, and eyes with protective gear at all times while on the job.

Plumbers should always put safety first as they work.

Mishandling tools can cause personal injury and damage to your plumbing.

Repairs also regularly take place in poorly lit areas. Flashlights allow plumbers to get a better view under sinks or in your basement.

A flashlight helps plumbers see what they’re doing.
