Water Contamination

Water contamination is a serious issue. Did you know that 80 percent of the world’s wastewater is dumped and untreated back into the environment, leading to many polluted rivers, lakes, and oceans? Contaminated water jeopardizes humans health as unsafe water kills more people each year than war and all others forms of violence combined.

But what is water contamination? Why does it happen? Water pollution happens when harmful substances like chemicals or microorganisms contaminate a stream, river, lake, ocean, aquifer, or any body of water. It degrades the water quality making it very toxic to humans and the surrounding environment.

Many in southern Ontario do not worry about water contamination because it is so rare but today we are discussing why you need to care!

Why water contamination poses problems

The Effects

  • The effects of water contamination are endless, especially for humans. Water contamination kills! It was the cause of over 1.8 million deaths in 2015 and the source of many illnesses around the world.

Waterborne Pathogens

  • Waterborne pathogens are bacteria and viruses from human and animal waste that end up contaminating water supplies. These diseases spread very quickly in water.

Legionnaires Disease

  • Thousands of people across North America are sickened every year by Legionnaires disease which is a form of pneumonia contracted from water sources like cooling towers and piped water.

For Example:

  • Not too far from southern Ontario, is a place called Flint, Michigan. This areas water supply is severely contaminated with lead and other industrial pollutants. Therefore, the water there is very dangerous to consume and thousands of people are put at risk.

Do you want to improve the quality of your water supply?

The May 2000, Walkerton contamination

Not too long ago in the year 2000, in the town of Walkerton, Ontario, there was a large water contamination outbreak. Escherichia coli 0157:H7 and Campylobacter Jenjuni contaminated the town's drinking water supply. As a result, seven people died and over 2000 people were very sick from the contamination.

This caused the Ontario government to implement regulations and policies surrounding drinking water issues in Ontario. This was a very scary time for Ontarians as no one knew what was in their water supply.

Many think that because an occurrence like this is rare that they do not need to take necessary precautions. However, history shows that mistakes happen. It is best to be prepared by implementing systems in your home like a home water filtration system to help combat issues like this.

What others are Saying…

What a great experience!! I did a search on the internet, called regarding the price of a water softener and the next day it was installed and we had soft water again. Paul removed the old softener, installed and setup the new one and was out in just over an hour. He also noted that the grounding of water pipe was not done by previous installer and he corrected that as well. Cost was the same as softener that was installed 14 years ago - I am impressed.
