5 Common Toilet Problems and How to Fix Them

1) Clogs
2) Leaks
3) Broken Handle
4) Toilet Running
5) Sweaty Tank

1) Clogs

One of the nastiest toilet problems is a clog. There are a couple of tried and true methods for removing clogs.

Method #1: Plunger

You can use a plunger to get rid of your clog. A force-cup plunger will work better than a regular one. Place the bulb of your plunger into your toilet drain and pump it using as much force as possible. Let up on the handle slowly to allow a little water to get in, letting you see if the drain is now clear. If it isn't, repeat the process.

Method #2: Closet Auger

For more difficult clogs, you can use a closet auger, also known as a toilet auger. Place the end of your closet auger in your toilet drain hole. As you push the rotor down, twist the handle. Be careful not the scratch the bowl while you are doing this though. The following video will show you how to use a closet auger.

2) Leaks

Most toilets have five seals where leaks could occur. You need to find out which seal the leak is coming from and either tighten it or replace it. Here are the different seal locations:

Between the tank and the bowl: This is the largest seal. If it needs to be replaced, you will have drain and remove the tank and turn the tank upside down to remove the old seal and replace it with a new one.

Mounting bolts at the base of the ballcock: Often you can simply tighten these bolts to stop the leak, however if you need to replace them, you would follow the same steps as you did with replacing the seal between the tank and the bowl.

Wax seal on the flange under the toilet base: You will need to remove your toilet and replace the wax seal to fix this toilet problem. If your flange is actually broken, it is best to get a professional plumber to help.

3) Broken Handle

Over time, your toilet's handle can come loose or become corroded. If this happens then it won't be able to pull the flap up or drop it back down securely. This is one of the toilet problems that is relatively easy to fix, however, it can be tricky to remove the handle.

The retaining nut that holds the handle is located inside the tank and it's on a reverse thread. If you are standing in front of the toilet, turn the nut to the left to loosen it. You will then be able to remove the broken handle and lever. Slide your new handle into place and replace the retaining nut. You can tighten the nut by turning it to the right.

The following video will show you the steps.

4) Toilet Running

One of the most common and annoying toilet problems is a running toilet. There are several things that could cause your toilet to run. These include:

Worn out flapper: You can tell if your flapper is worn out by taking the lid off your toilet tank and pressing a wooden spoon down on your flapper.

If the running noise stops then you know that the flapper isn't properly sealing so it is probably worn out. It will need to be replaced. For detailed instructions on how to replace your flapper, click here.

Toilet problems: Test your flapper by pressing down on it

Fill Tube: If your pressing on the flapper doesn't make the running noise stop, then the problem could be with your fill tube, the small plastic tube that connects from the main assembly in the tank to the overflow pipe that drains off extra water when your tank fills too high.

If your fill tube is underwater then you will need to cut it shorter so that it is above the water level.

Toilet-problems: Make sure your fill tube is above the water level

The Float: If your float is set too high, then the water level in your toilet will rise above the overflow pipe and your toilet will keep running.

The water in your tank should be somewhere between 1.5 and 2.5 cm below the top of your overflow pipe. To see the detailed steps to fix a float, click here.

Fill Valve: If your flapper, fill tube, and float are all fine, then the problem could be your fill valve. To get detailed instructions on how to fix your fill valve, click here.

5) Sweaty Tank

A sweaty tank is one of those toilet problems that if left unchecked, can cause damage to your flooring. There are a few solutions to solve this problem:

Put a tray under your toilet: This is a cheap solution that will catch any drips and stop the water from damaging your flooring.

Insulate your tank: You can purchase a do-it-yourself toilet insulation kit. This is a tedious fix that involves emptying your tank, cutting insulating foam panels and then gluing them to the inside of your tank.

Install a new toilet: If you prefer you can install a new toilet that is already insulated.

Install an Anti-Sweat Valve: You can get an anti-sweat valve installed in your toilet that puts a small amount of warm water into your toilet tank. This warms up your tank so that it won't sweat.
