1. What is home dechlorination?
Simply put, whole home dechlorination is the process of removing chlorine from the water supply before it reaches your faucets.
If it’s possible based on the plumbing in your house, certain taps can be isolated to give you chlorine-free drinking water.
But whether it’s from a single tap or throughout your entire house, dechlorination can be used with or without a water softener to improve the quality of your water.

Reverse osmosis can also remove chlorine from your water. See the video above to learn how it works.
2. Home dechlorination: How to set it up
There are a couple of options to consider here.
Pitcher filter
One popular way to remove chlorine from drinking water is by filtering your water through a pitcher filter that you keep in the fridge. There are many to choose from, and most are quite effective at minimizing chlorine levels.
Dechlorinator
You could also get a water filtration attachment for your tap itself that will be just as effective as a pitcher filter.
Just remember to replace the filter once every few months, or as indicated by the manufacturer, to maintain proper filtration function.

3. How home dechlorination compares to other water systems
A dechlorinator only removes chlorine from your water.
If you don't like the taste of chlorine in your water, then installing a dechlorinator will remove any chlorine that is present in your tap water.
But if you have hard water and want to soften it, you will need to install a water softener as well.
You can purchase water softeners that have a built-in dechlorinator, but installing two separate units will save you in the long run.
Your initial costs will be slightly higher, but each individual unit will last longer and bring down your total cost of ownership considerably over time.
Some softeners can dechlorinate, but it’s better to have a system for each operation.

You could attempt to install water systems on your own, but we recommend calling a professional to make sure it’s done right. It will cost you more down the road if the job isn’t done right the first time.
4. Why is there chlorine in your water?
For years, chlorine has been added to municipal drinking water supplies.
Why? According to the Government of Canada, “Chlorine is a disinfectant added to drinking water to reduce or eliminate microorganisms, such as bacteria and viruses, which can be present in water supplies.”
Additionally, chlorine has greatly reduced the risk of waterborne diseases. Chlorine addition is regulated by the Province of Ontario’s Safe Drinking Water Act and is continuously monitored, according to the City of Toronto.
Chlorine was added to drinking water to eliminate bacteria.
The problem with chlorine
Chlorinated water can also have a very specific, sometimes unpleasant smell that turns many off from drinking it.
Some people are also bothered by the taste of chlorinated water.
Additionally, there have been recent studies that indicate overexposure to chlorine can be potentially harmful.
According to Health Canada, there have been documented increases in bladder cancer and colon cancer among people who drank chlorinated water for 35 years or more.
However, it should be noted the benefits of chlorine often outweigh the health risks, and it remains the choice of water treatment experts.
It’s usually the smell that puts people off the most. If you’re concerned about the chlorine in your drinking water, contact WaterSmart today.
