What Is Hard Water?
Having hard water in your home means that there are large amounts of calcium, magnesium, and possibly other minerals such as iron in your water.
Water hardness is determined by how many milligrams of minerals are found in each litre of your water. If you have more than 17 mg/litre, then your water is considered to be hard.
A water softener removes the calcium and magnesium ions from your water that makes it hard. Learn more about hard water here.
A water softener will remove the minerals in your hard water making it soft
Hard Water in Guelph
Guelph has some of the hardest water in all of Canada, with a water hardness level of 21-33 grains per gallon in most of the city. The national average in Canada is only 10.5 grains per gallon. That is 2 to 3 times higher than the Canadian average!
The hardest water in the city is found in the area north of Paisley Road and between Highway 6 and Victoria Road North. To see exactly how hard the water is in your neighbourhood, click here.
Getting the right water softener that can handle the water hardness levels of your water is important to fully eliminate the problems that hard water in Guelph can cause.

Tips for Water Softener Maintenance and Repairs
Tip #1: Often, if your water softener isn't functioning properly it can be fixed instead of replaced. At WaterSmart, we always try to fix water softeners over replacing them as we can often do repairs very quickly and inexpensively.
Tip #2: If you do determine that your water softener can not be fixed, or is not worth being fixed, we can provide and install a replacement unit at a reasonable rate.
Tip #3: If you need your water softener repaired and you bought it from Sears, don't worry. WaterSmart can do repairs on all Kenmore models.
Tip #4: Water softeners, for the most part, are very reliable and require minimal to no maintenance to keep them running. However, at your request, we can check for salt bridging, inspect water flow, adjust regeneration frequencies, conduct water testing, sanitize the tank, or look into other requests you may have.
If you would like us to perform an inspection or preventative maintenance check, give us a call and we would be happy to discuss further.
