Why is Dechlorination Important?

Dechlorination is the process of removing chlorine from the water supply before it reaches your faucets.

It might seem self-explanatory, but there’s more you need to know.

1. Why there’s chlorine in your water

2. Why you might want dechlorination

3. Dechlorination methods

WaterSmart Systems & Plumbing is here to help with dechlorination and other home water needs. Keep reading to learn more, and contact us today to get one set up in your home.

1. Why there’s chlorine in your water

Municipalities often add chlorine to local drinking water supplies.

Why? Well, per the Government of Canada, “Chlorine is a disinfectant added to drinking water to reduce or eliminate microorganisms, such as bacteria and viruses, which can be present in water supplies.”

Additionally, chlorine reduces the risk of waterborne diseases.

Chlorine levels are regulated by the Province of Ontario’s Safe Drinking Water Act and are continuously monitored, according to the City of Toronto.

Government officials constantly monitor chlorine levels in Ontario’s drinking water.

2. Why you might want dechlorination

If chlorine is beneficial, why might you seek out dechlorination methods?

For starters, chlorinated water sometimes has a very specific, sometimes unpleasant smell that turns many off from drinking it. Some people are also bothered by the taste of chlorinated water.

Additionally, there have been recent studies that indicate overexposure to chlorine can be potentially harmful.

For example, there have been documented increases in bladder cancer and colon cancer among people who drank chlorinated water for 35 years or more, according to Health Canada.

However, it should be noted the benefits of chlorine often outweigh the health risks, and it remains the choice of water treatment experts.

Some homeowners choose dechlorination despite the benefits of chlorine in tap water.

3. Dechlorination methods

Dechlorination is the process of removing chlorine from the water supply before it reaches your faucets.

You can go with whole-home dechlorination, or certain taps can be isolated to give you chlorine-free drinking water.

Here are the two simplest methods for dechlorination.

1. Tap Filter

This is a simple water filtration attachment for your tap.

You must replace the filter once every few months, or as indicated by the manufacturer, to maintain proper filtration function.

2. PITCHER FILTER

One popular way to remove chlorine from drinking water is by filtering your water through a pitcher filter that you keep in the fridge.

There are many to choose from, and most are quite effective at minimizing chlorine levels.

At WaterSmart, we recommend investing in effective, whole-home dechlorination that can be used with any water softener.

I called WaterSmart Waterloo on Friday, because the resin tank in my old softener had cracked. Not good. It is now Monday, and they just installed a new Tahoe water softener system in just over an hour. The technician was on time, courteous, efficient, tidy (he left nary a trace!) and explained the system to me. The new softener is quiet and as it’s a dry brine system, I expect far less salt consumption. I wish the rest of my life were this easy and efficient! I highly recommend this company!
