1. Signs of when to replace a toilet

Here are some signs that indicate it might be time to replace your toilet:

Frequent Repairs

If you find yourself frequently fixing issues with your toilet, such as constantly running water, leaks, or problems with flushing, it might be more cost-effective to replace it rather than continue with repairs.

Cracks or Damage

Inspect the porcelain bowl and tank for cracks, chips, or other visible damage. Cracks can lead to leaks and other problems over time.

Chronic Clogs

If your toilet consistently clogs, even after attempts to clear the blockage, it may be a sign of an inefficient or outdated toilet. Newer toilets are designed to have better flushing capabilities.

Water Efficiency

Older toilets use significantly more water per flush compared to newer, low-flow models. Replacing an older toilet with a more water-efficient one can save you money on your water bill over time.

Toilet Wobbling

A wobbly toilet can indicate a problem with the wax ring seal or a damaged flange. If the toilet isn't securely anchored, it can lead to leaks or even sewage backup.

Stains or Odors

Stubborn stains that can't be removed or persistent odours that linger even after cleaning could be a sign that the porcelain is compromised or that there are issues with the wax ring seal.

Aging Toilet

If your toilet is more than 20 years old, it's likely less water-efficient and may not meet current plumbing standards. Replacing it with a newer model can improve efficiency and functionality.

Energy Rebates or Incentives

In some regions, there are energy efficiency incentives or rebates for replacing older toilets with water-saving models. Check with your local utility company to see if you qualify for any programs.

Style and Aesthetics

If you're remodelling your bathroom and the toilet's style or colour doesn't match your new design, it might be a good time to replace it for aesthetic reasons.

Environmental Considerations

If you're environmentally conscious, replacing an old toilet with a low-flow or dual-flush model can reduce water consumption and have a positive impact on the environment.

2. Signs of when to repair your toilet

Deciding whether to repair or replace your toilet depends on the specific issue, the age and condition of the toilet, and your budget. Here's a guide to help you make that decision:

Minor Leaks

If you notice a small leak around the base of the toilet, it may be due to a damaged wax ring or loose bolts. These issues are typically repairable and don't require a full replacement.

Running Water

If your toilet continues to run after flushing, it may be due to a faulty flapper valve, which is a relatively simple and inexpensive repair.

Clogs

Occasional clogs can often be resolved with a plunger or a plumbing snake. Frequent clogs may indicate a larger issue with your plumbing, which may require a professional assessment.

Cosmetic Issues

If the toilet has minor cosmetic issues, such as scratches or stains, these can usually be addressed with cleaning or minor touch-ups.

Handle and Flush Mechanism Issues

Problems with the toilet handle or flush mechanism, like a broken handle or chain, are usually easy and inexpensive to fix.

Before deciding whether or not your toilet needs repaired or replaced, it's often a good idea to consult with a professional plumber who can assess the specific issues with your toilet and provide recommendations.

They can help you weigh the costs of repairs versus replacement and ensure that your plumbing is in good working order. Ultimately, your choice should align with your budget, needs, and long-term goals for your bathroom.

3. How to replace a toilet

Once you’ve determined when to replace a toilet, it can be a moderately complex DIY project, but it's manageable if you have some plumbing experience and the right tools. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you replace a toilet:

Tools and Materials You'll Need:

  • New toilet (with wax ring and bolts included)

  • Adjustable wrench

  • Screwdriver

  • Plumber's putty (optional)

  • Hacksaw (for cutting bolts if needed)

  • Bucket and sponge

  • Rags or towels

  • Pipe wrench (optional)

  • Closet bolts and flange repair kit (if needed)

Safety Precautions:

Turn off the water supply to the toilet by shutting the shut-off valve located near the base of the toilet or at the water supply line.

Wear gloves and eye protection when working with the toilet to maintain hygiene and prevent any debris from getting into your eyes.

Steps to Replace a Toilet:

1. Remove the Old Toilet:

  • Flush the toilet to remove most of the water from the tank and bowl.

  • Disconnect the water supply line from the fill valve at the bottom of the tank. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the nut.

  • Remove the caps covering the closet bolts (the bolts securing the toilet to the floor). Use a screwdriver to remove any nuts or washers securing the toilet to the floor.

  • Carefully lift the old toilet off the closet flange (the pipe fitting in the floor) and set it aside. Be prepared for residual water, so have a bucket and sponge ready.

2. Prepare the Area:

  • Inspect the closet flange for damage. If it's broken or corroded, you may need to replace it with a flange repair kit.

  • Scrape off any remaining wax or putty from the closet flange. Clean the area thoroughly.

3. Install the new wax ring:

  • Place a new wax ring onto the closet flange. The wax ring should fit snugly over the flange, creating a watertight seal.

  • If the closet flange is below the finished floor level (common in some installations), you may need to use an extra-thick wax ring or a spacer to ensure a proper seal.

4. Set the New Toilet:

  • Carefully position the new toilet over the wax ring and closet bolts, ensuring they pass through the holes in the base of the toilet.

  • Press the toilet down gently to compress the wax ring and create a seal.

5. Secure the Toilet:

  • Place washers and nuts onto the closet bolts and tighten them evenly to secure the toilet to the floor. Be careful not to over-tighten, as this can crack the toilet base.

  • Cover the closet bolt nuts with the provided caps or decorative covers.

6. Reconnect the Water Supply:

  • Reattach the water supply line to the fill valve at the bottom of the toilet tank. Hand-tighten the nut, and then use an adjustable wrench to give it a quarter-turn for a secure connection.

  • Slowly turn on the water supply by opening the shut-off valve.

7. Check for Leaks:

  • Let the tank fill, and check for any leaks around the base of the toilet and at the water supply connection.

8. Flush and Test:

  • Flush the toilet a few times to ensure it's working correctly and there are no leaks.

9. Finish Up:

  • If there is any excess wax visible around the base of the toilet, you can trim it with a utility knife.

  • Attach the toilet seat according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Congratulations, you've successfully replaced your toilet! Dispose of the old toilet properly, either by taking it to a recycling centre or arranging for a waste disposal service.
