Do You Need Whole House Dechlorination?

1. Why you might need whole house dechlorination

Did you know chlorine is added to municipal drinking water supplies?

Why? Because “Chlorine is a disinfectant added to drinking water to reduce or eliminate microorganisms, such as bacteria and viruses, which can be present in water supplies,” according to the Government of Canada.

Unfortunately, chlorinated water can also have an unpleasant odour that turns many off from drinking it.

Some people are also bothered by the taste of chlorinated water.

Therefore, whole house dechlorination is the process of removing chlorine from the water supply before it reaches your faucets.

You might not need it per se, but whole house dechlorination is an option if you don't like the taste and/or smell of chlorine in your water.

2. What you need to know about chlorine in your water

According to the City of Toronto, chlorine levels are regulated by the Province of Ontario’s Safe Drinking Water Act and continuously monitored.

As far as the health risks and benefits go, studies show general exposure to chlorine greatly reduces the risk of waterborne diseases.

However, there have been recent studies that indicate overexposure to chlorine can be potentially harmful.

According to Health Canada, there have been documented increases in bladder cancer and colon cancer among people who drank chlorinated water for 35 years or more.

Current scientific data shows that the benefits of chlorinating our drinking water (less disease) are much greater than any health risks, and chlorine remains the choice of water treatment experts.

The Government of Canada endorses the use of chlorine in our water systems.

3. Other dechlorination methods

So, you might not need a whole house dechlorination system, but it’s certainly an option if you don't like the smell or taste of chlorine in your water,

There are also a few other options to consider if you wish to remove chlorine from your water.

PITCHER FILTER

One popular way to remove chlorine from drinking water is by filtering your water through a pitcher filter that you keep in the fridge. There are many to choose from, and most are quite effective at minimizing chlorine levels.

Faucet attachment

You could also get a water filtration attachment for your tap itself that will be just as effective as a pitcher filter.

Just remember to replace the filter once every few months, or as indicated by the manufacturer, to maintain proper filtration function.

You could attempt to install water systems on your own, but we recommend calling a professional to make sure it’s done right. It will cost you more down the road if the job isn’t done right the first time.
