Water softener repair is a fact of life for most water softeners. As with any appliance, water softeners can experience a number of problems during their operating life. At WaterSmart we have seen or repaired almost every conceivable issue. Listed below are some of the more common problems that operators of water softeners face. Salt bridges occur when your salt creates a crusty layer at the top of the tank, with a hollow space beneath it. This causes the operator to believe they have a full tank of salt when that is not the case. When you suspect that this may be the case, use a rubber mallet to tap the outside of the softener casing. Begin at the bottom of the tank and work your way up. If you hear a hollow sound, you probably have a salt bridge. Tap the tank again, this time more forcefully and it should cause the salt bridge to collapse, allowing you to add salt.
Problems With Timers
Occasionally water softeners fail to work correctly due to user errors. The most common of these is probably time setting errors. Make sure that you set your softener at the correct time, or you may experience hard water, leading your to believe that your softener is malfunctioning.
If your unit is attempting to recycle while you are running water, you will notice hard water entering your plumbing system. This can happen if your home has lost power, leaving the softener (along with other appliances in the home) set at the wrong time. To prevent this, check your softener's timer and reset it to the correct time after any power outage.

Faulty Power Supply
In addition to the power outages mentioned above, it is possible to experience problems with the power supply. Check to see if your unit is connected correctly to a working power source. If you suspect there is a problem with your electrical outlet, try plugging your unit into another outlet (you may require an extension cord to do this) to see if that solves the problem. When your unit does not power up in either outlet, there is probably a problem with the unit itself. In this case, call a professional.
Water softeners require motors to operate. It goes without saying then, that a defective motor will prevent the softener from effectively carrying out its task. If your motor is not working, first check that the device is plugged into an operating electrical outlet. Check the power cable is connected. If the motor still won't start, it is likely that you have a motor problem that requires either a repair or a replacement.
Water flow is necessary for a water softener to work effectively. Different types of blockages can impede the water flow, preventing the water softener from functioning effectively. blockages often occur at the filter screen or the brine line. Check your manual for how to cope with these types of blockages. Water softeners vary in their construction and often require specialized repairs.
If you are unsure how to clear a blockage or are concerned that the problem is more extensive, contact us at WaterSmart as we make repairs to many different brands of water softeners, including our own models.
Using resin beads is the most effective method for improving water quality. Although durable, and long lasting, resin beads can also break down over time.
If you see resin particles floating in your soft water, you need to check the condition of your beads. They may require cleaning or replacement.
