"Watersmart installed a softener at my daughter's new house and I was there during the process. The installers were fast, friendly and courteous. They explained the process to install it and gave her clear instructions on how to use it. They did not leave until they were sure that there were no issues. They did a thorough clean up after they were done. My wife and I were looking for a new softener at the same time so we went to their store on Davenport. We had the same friendly service with no effort to sell us up to a larger model. We got a great deal and they installed it the next day, removing our old tank and unit. Great service, great prices, and very skilled technicians. I would recommend them to anyone considering a new or replacement unit."

Why Do I Need a Water Softener?

A water softener breaks down calcium, magnesium, and iron while replacing them with sodium ions. This removes all of the hard minerals in the water making what we call soft water. Soft water has a number of household benefits.

Longer Lasting Appliances

Operating a water softener to provide soft water will lengthen the life of your appliances. Water heaters, coffee makers, shower heads, washing machines, and any other appliances that use hard water will have their lifespan significantly shortened. Hard water damages appliances by leaving behind a scaly buildup of minerals on the inside and on working parts, thus decreasing their useful lifespan and also making them work less efficiently.  By installing a water softener you will put less stress on your appliances. This will convert to fewer repairs and replacement costs, saving yourself hard earned money over time.

Longer Lasting Plumbing Systems

If your house uses hard water, you will run into problems with your plumbing time after time. No matter what you do or what preventative steps you take, hard water is rough on plumbing. You’ll find the problem is persistent. A water softener is what you need. Soft water leaves behind little to no residue, preventing the possibility of clogging your pipes because of the water quality. With a water softener, your system becomes clean and you can rest assured you will have longer lasting pipes requiring much less maintenance.

Cleaning Simplified

Hard water can cause limescale buildup on faucets, fixtures, and can also make cleaning more challenging. Soaps and household cleaners lather best with soft water. Hard water prohibits lathering, not only leaving a messy buildup but also making it harder to remove the buildup later. On metal faucets and finishes you will especially notice scum and buildup.

After installing a water softener you can see this buildup and scum disappear within a couple of days. Your bathroom and kitchen can be clean and sparkly. With soft water, you can not only clean better and more efficiently, but you also remove some of the work by not having to worry about buildup and scum in the same capacity.

Cleaner Dishes

Along with eliminating scum and buildup on fixtures, a water softener will also remove scum and buildup on your utensils, glassware, and dishes. Have you ever experienced a white residue on your dishes after they’ve been cleaned? This is often due to the minerals in hard water. They leave marks and scum and often not even detergent can remove them.

Installing a whole home water softener eliminates this problem. It removes the scum that covers your utensils, glasses, and dishes, and in the end, you will have beautiful, shiny, polished kitchenware. Soft water does not leave residue on dishes, rather cleans well and even causes a sparkle after rinsing.

Softer Clothes

When it comes to washing clothes, with hard water you’ll often notice white streaks on the clothes after they are dry. Hard water not only leaves residue on “washed” clothes but it also wears the fabrics and lessens the quality over time. Soft water prolongs the lifespan of your clothes. Because the impurities are removed it keeps clothes soft, fresh, clean looking, and in good shape.

Care for your Skin and Hair

Hard water dries out your skin and hair, causing irritations, blocking pores and exacerbating problems like eczema. As much as you use beauty products or special washes and shampoos, they won’t be fully effective if you are using them with hard water.  Soft water is gentler and kinder to your skin, especially for those who suffer from dry skin. Studies in the UK have shown that children who grow up in areas with hard water are 50% more likely to suffer from eczema. Soft water can resolve this issue entirely. With soft water, you will also use less shampoo and have healthier hair as it frees your scalp from clogged pores and lathers much better.

Hard Water Explained

Hard water is defined as water that "contains an appreciable amount of dissolved salts of calcium and magnesium," according to the freedictionary.com  The Encyclopedia Brittanica describes it as "water that contains salts of calcium and magnesium principally as bicarbonates." Testing the pH level in the water will show the hardness level of the water. Another measurement frequently used is the ppm or (parts per million) measurement scale. The higher the number, the harder the water.

Soft Water Explained

Rainwater is soft water as it is pure, other than some acidic elements that it may have picked up in the air. However, when soft water comes into contact with the ground it picks up some of the elements present as it flows through an area. Distilled water is also soft as it has had the levels of calcium and magnesium significantly reduced. The levels of minerals in the water can be measured scientifically. Soft water is recognized as having a mineral content less than 17.1 mg/l.
