Kenmore Water Softener: Common Problems and Solutions

A water softener is an important appliance for those tapping into hard water, and there's a range of issues that pop up from time to time, whether it be not using up the salt, a lack of water flow, or something even more serious. Here are a few other common problems and solutions.

Problem: Leaky Softener Tank

If you have a tank that leaks, the first thing you should do is check the warranty. On most Kenmore models the warranty is good against any leaks for ten years after purchase. Below you can find a list of manuals for many of the common models to see if your warranty does cover your leak based on the date you purchased your unit. If it is not covered under warranty, give WaterSmart a call and we can take care of the problem for you.

Problem: No Soft Water

If your system is just not outputting soft water you know you have an issue that needs to be solved. This issue is often caused by a tiny vacuum leak somewhere, probably in a rubber part. Another common problem is that an O-ring slips off or gets damaged. In both of these scenarios, it is probably best to contact a local water softener repair shop, like WaterSmart, to come to your house and fix the issue.

Unless you are a plumber by trade, you will probably waste a lot of time trying to troubleshoot the issue, while a professional who deals with these issues on a daily basis would most likely be able to fix the issue quickly and for a low cost.

Problem: Salt Tank Fills With Water

If your Kenmore water softener salt tank is full of water, you are experiencing one of the more common problems with the Kenmore models. When this happens you will usually also find that you don't have soft water. Here's a good video summary explaining this issue, among others.

There is a wide range of causes for this issue, and therefore a lot of troubleshooting is required to determine the cause. As you can see from the video, the solutions require significant dismantling of your unit. To save yourself time and from damaging any parts of your unit, it is best to get a trained professional to fix the unit. Our trained professionals at WaterSmart can quickly and inexpensively fix this issue, saving you time and money.

Problem: Water in Salt Tank About Half Way Up the Tank

Another common concern with a Kenmore water softener is water sitting about halfway up their salt tank. If you have this issue there is something wrong with your water softener. The good news is that usually it can be fixed easily.

The most common reason for the salt tank being half full of water is that the nozzle and venturi are dirty or blocked. This is a process that Kenmore provides instructions on how to fix on your own at www.kenmorewater.com. It does require significant dismantling of the unit, so if you are not very mechanically inclined or patient, it will probably be best to contact an expert like the expert water softener technicians at WaterSmart to save you the frustration.

If you are up to the challenge, you can check on the process and attempt to clean or replace the nozzle and venturi.

Problems Not Covered Under Warranty

As mentioned above, the first thing you should do if you have a problem with your Kenmore water softener is check to see if the repair will be under warranty. Unfortunately, the Kenmore water softeners do not have a great warranty; it's only good for one year from the date of purchase for any defects, with the exception of leaks, which the warranty covers for 10 years on most models.

In this Kenmore water softener manual, you will see right on page #2 that the warranty is only 1 year. This is standard across all Kenmore models.

Below are some more links to warranties of some of their top models:

Kenmore UltraSoft 800

Kenmore 24 000

Kenmore 31 000 Hybrid Water Softener

Kenmore 32 000 Extra High-Efficiency Softener

Kenmore 41 000

On top of that, Sears is now closed, meaning you can no longer go directly to the source. If you do have an issue with your Kenmore water softener and cannot get it dealt with under the warranty, we would recommend you bring it to us here at WaterSmart to address the issue - you may just need a simple repair that could be much less expensive than buying an entirely new system.
