5 Signs of Hard Water Damage on Hair
Hard water is known to have adverse effects on appliances and plumbing, as calcium and magnesium minerals in your water source build up to form limescale both within and on surface areas. What you may not know is hard water also raises up the tiny little scales along each strand of your hair, making them catch on each other.
You may have noticed that hard water requires much more soap, shampoo, or detergent than soft water. This is because the minerals decrease the soaps lathering capabilities. The minerals in the water can cause buildup and residue to be left behind in your hair after you wash. The problem is that the minerals and oxidizers in the water weaken the hair.
These minerals are positively charged, while our hair has a negative electrical charge. When they come in contact, they are attracted like a magnet. This results in weak, damaged hair and can even cause the hair to fall out, along with the five signs outlines below.
You can determine your actual water hardness level by looking at the maps of the Kitchener-Waterloo, Cambridge, and Guelph regions provided here. For more, read our article on The Facts About Hard Water and Health.
There are five specific signs of hard water damage on your hair.
1. Your hair feels dry and frizzy
What is frizzy hair? According to Mo Knows Hair, "Frizz occurs when the cuticle layer of your hair is raised, allowing moisture to pass through and swell the strands. As a result, your hair appears dry and frizzy instead of smooth and defined."
Keep in mind curly hair tends to have more frizz than straight hair because of dehydration in the strands, which leaves it more vulnerable to frizzing.
2. Colour is fading quickly or turning brassy
Another sign of hard water damage on your hair is quickly fading colour or brassiness. According to Redken, "Brassiness refers to the unwanted warm tones that show up in coloured hair."
This typically happens in dark hair that gets dyed platinum or blonde, but it can also occur in hair that’s been highlighted or in hair that’s been lightened to brown.
If you spend a lot of time and money maintaining the colour of your hair, hard water needs to be dealt with.
3. Split ends
Split ends are actually damaged strands of hair. This fraying or splitting of hair is known as trichoptilosis. It's important to trim away split ends to prevent the split from travelling along the strand of hair towards your scalp.
Since you need to know whether or not you have split ends, check your hair regularly and recognize what split ends look like.
4. Hair getting easily tangled
If you have long hair, one of the most frustrating things about maintenance (other than it taking forever to dry) is having to constantly deal with knots and tangles.
Not only are they time-consuming to deal with, but they can also be quite painful and damaging.
Make life easier by preventing tangled hair.
Dandruff is a condition of the scalp that causes flakes of skin to appear and is often accompanied by itching. Here are some key facts from Medical News Today:
Here are some key points about dandruff. More detail is the main article!
- Dandruff is a common condition, but it can be embarrassing and difficult to treat.
- It is not related to hygiene, but washing and brushing the hair can help remove old skin flakes.
- Risk factors include having certain skin or medical conditions and the use of inappropriate hair products.
- Various treatments are available over the counter, but more severe cases should be seen by a doctor.
All of the above can result in stress, hardship, and require resources to help fix. The best solution for hair damage caused by hard water is to invest in a water softener.
