Can I Install My New Water Softener Myself?
You can, but why not let the professionals at WaterSmart do it for you?
Let us take away the worry and the hassle of doing it yourself.
WaterSmart has 30-plus years of experience in Kitchener and the surrounding areas.
Our highly trained plumbers know what they are doing and can expertly handle any unforeseen challenges that might arise during the installation. And remember, installation is always free with the purchase of any WaterSmart water softener.
In addition, we install our Smart Series water softeners a little differently than the conventional softener to make it more water-efficient. This is done when we program the softener. Someone other than a certified WaterSmart technician would have a hard time both knowing how to do this and figuring it out.
If installed incorrectly, the unit can leak into your basement. Also, if someone other than an expert technician from WaterSmart installs one of our water softeners, it will void the store warranty on the product.
The unit will still have a limited manufacturer's warranty on some of the parts, such as the computer board and fibreglass resin tank, but our store warranty goes beyond those warranties.

What Does the Water Softener Installation Process Include?
The installation process for a water softener generally involves several steps. Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect:
Assessment and Planning:
Water Hardness Testing: Check the hardness level of your water to determine the right size and type of softener needed.
Site Evaluation: Identify a suitable location for the softener, typically near the main water supply line and where it can easily connect to a drain.
Gathering Tools and Materials:
Ensure you have all necessary tools (pipe wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers) and materials (softener unit, bypass valve, fittings, tubing, and possibly a drain line).
Shut Off Water Supply:
Turn off the main water supply to prevent any leaks or flooding during installation.
Bypass Valve Installation (if applicable):
Install a bypass valve on the softener if it doesn’t come pre-installed. This allows you to divert water around the softener for maintenance or emergencies.
Plumbing Connections:
Cut and Connect Pipes: Cut into the main water line to install the softener. Use appropriate fittings to connect the inlet and outlet ports of the softener to the plumbing.
Drain Line Connection: Connect a drain line to the softener’s drain port, ensuring it goes to a suitable drain (like a floor drain or sink).
Brine Tank Setup:
If your softener has a separate brine tank, set it up next to the softener, and connect it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Salt Filling:
Fill the brine tank with water-softening salt, following the manufacturer's recommendations for type and amount.
Electrical Connections (if applicable):
If your softener is electronically controlled, plug it into a nearby outlet.
System Setup and Programming:
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to program the softener for your specific water hardness, regeneration schedule, and other settings.
Testing the System:
Turn the water supply back on and check for leaks. Run water through the system to ensure it’s functioning properly.
Final Adjustments and Cleanup:
Make any necessary adjustments to settings and tidy up the installation area, disposing of any debris or old equipment.
User Instructions:
Provide instructions on how to maintain the system, including when to add salt and how to perform regular maintenance checks.
It’s always a good idea to consult the manufacturer’s installation guide for specific instructions, and if you're not comfortable with plumbing work, consider hiring a professional.
