Our Tap Water Is Hard - What Can We Do?

Hard water is caused by calcium and magnesium buildups. Certain areas tend to be more susceptible to these minerals and the cities of Kitchener- Waterloo, Cambridge, and Guelph and the surrounding areas certainly fall into this category. Check this link to see if your area is particularly affected. Thankfully, removing these minerals from your water is not an intimidating process.

At Watersmart we are experts at solving hard water problems. Our waters softeners provide a long list of benefits that you and your family will appreciate. Read our post entitled, "Why You Need A Water Softener" for more information. Then contact us for a more detailed explanation and quote.

Our Water Tastes And Smells Funny - How Can I Solve This?

Homeowners often complain of water that smells and tastes odd or unpalatable. Often the cause is chlorine or other chemicals that are present in the water. Chlorine has been added to municipal water for decades as a disinfectant that helps to kill bacteria throughout the system. Unfortunately, chlorine has other side effects: it dries out hair and skin; fades clothes; and damages rubber parts in appliances.

A Reverse Osmosis Unit is an excellent way to remove chlorine from water. Visit our "Reverse Osmosis" page for more details about how this works. Another option is a Dechlorinator unit that can be used to improve the effectiveness of a water softener. Some water softeners also have chlorine removal capabilities. An excellent example would be our Model: WS-30-S which is more than just a water softener; it also removes chlorine from the water.

water problems - scale buildup under a microscope

I'm Getting A Scaly Buildup on My Sinks, Toilets And Showers - How Can I Fix This?

Scaly buildups are caused by hard water that includes large amounts of calcium and magnesium. The buildup damage bathtubs, sinks, showers and toilets, and also occurs inside pipes, reducing water flow, and creating potential leaks. Appliances, clothing, skin and hair are also affected.

The image to the left is an example of limescale buildup, taken by scanning electron microscopy.

Once buildup has occurred, the only way to remove it is by using descaling agents, or cleaners that are generally available from hardware and department stores.

A water softener is an ideal and cost-effective way to remove these mineral deposits from hard water and prevent scale buildup.

Contact us about the selection of water softeners that we have available. Installation is generally uncomplicated with the unit being connected indoors where the water line enters the property.

I Have A Leak In My Pipes! - Who Do I Call?

Simple repairs to dripping faucets and clogged drains are usually within the capabilities of most homeowners willing to get their tools out and save some money. However, leaking pipes are on another level, with most homeowners wary of replacing and soldering damaged sections.

So how do you avoid a major flood and get the repairs taken care of economically and effectively? Contact us at Watersmart. We do more than install and maintain water softeners - we are your full-service plumbing and service experts. Count on us to get the job done promptly and affordably.
